DescriptionOil portrait of Robert Garden (1846-1912) on canvas in wooden gilt frame. Born in Aberdeenshire, Robert Garden started as a Master slater, but set up a travelling shop business in Orkney with a horse-drawn van. The business, based in Bridge Street, Kirkwall, expanded to include shop boats which visited the outer isles, Shetland, and the west coast of Scotland. Robert Garden built houses for workers on what is now known as Garden Street, and was a member of the congregation and involved in restoration work on St Magnus Cathedral. He died in Kirkwall.
