DescriptionPottery base sherd fragment found in topsoil taken from car park behind DHSS (part of old broadsands).
An incomplete ceramic vessel of uncertain date, likely Early Medieval to Modern date, c.1200-1900. The sherd features around two thirds of the base and part of the body. The vessel appears to be an example of the common Late Medieval Scottish Redware, unevenly fired or else bearing signs of use resulting in darkening of parts of the exterior face, as well as a darker centre to its walls than the redder external faces. The fabric features roughly 10% small white inclusions, with sparkly, micacious elements visible throughout the walls. The vessel bears no visible decoration and appears wheel-turned, though the internal face of the base is rough and uneven, possibly indicating hand finishing.
