DescriptionMen's Ba', New Years Day 1938 Made by 'Old Garrioch', won by WHB Sutherland, Doonie, chemist in Kirkwall. The Ba' game takes place in Kirkwall every Christmas and New Years Day. It has taken place, in its present for, from about 1850 and has been in existence for much longer. The two teams are called the "Uppies" and the "Doonies", which is derived from the "Up-the gates" and "Down-the-gates". The Uppies win if they get the Ba' to the junction of Main Street and New Scapa Road, the Doonies win if the Ba' enters Kirkwall Bay, Usually in the harbour basin. The Men's Ba' is thrown-up at 1pm at the Mercat Cross, outside St Magnus Cathedral.
