DescriptionSword from the Viking boat burial at Scar, Sanday (also known as Quoy Banks).
Iron sword with double-edged blade. The lower guard is decorated with alternating bands of silver and brass. Along the blade are the mineralised remains of the wooden scabbard, bound with textile and lined with fleece. The blade was broken at the time of burial. The sword is Type H sword and dates to 800-950 CE.
