DescriptionDress shirt of fine linen, from flax grown and woven in Orkney (see A.Fenton "The Northern Isles, Orkney and Shetland" P.P. and letters in "Exhibits" file). The shirt dates from c.1830. "It was customary on the engagement of a young couple for the girl to make a shirt for her betrothed to be worn on the occasion of their marriage. In the case of this garment the young man was lost at sea before the wedding took place and in all probablility the shirt has never been worn but lay in the bottom drawer until the woman eventually died and her next of kin came upon it. From there it was given to Ex-Provost P.C. Flett of Kirkwall who in turn handed it over to Mr Halkett. Mr Halkett was manager of the British Linen Bank in Kirkwall. He passed it to the head office in Edinburgh for a display. After the Linen Bank merged with the Bank of Scotland, the shirt was returned to the Kirkwall branch (in 1973). See associated letters in exhibits file).
