DescriptionRIFLE; Beautifully finished and embellished percussion cap muzzle-loading game rifle. The single barrel is heavy and of octagonal section. The rifled bore is hexagonal, almost certainly an example of Whitworth rifling, intended as an improvement on the military standard Enfield rifling: many examples were produced privately for the Volunteers. The slim, elegant wooden stock with its protruding cheek rest has some nice relief carving of scrollwork plus some chequering: on the right hand rear. There is a brass butt plate, a heavy brass trigger guard extending rearwards, and a silver escutcheon plate beneath the rear stock. Inlaid brass scrollwork surrounds the brass cover to a wad box hollowed from the stock. Stock and barrel are pinned together at three locations. There is some decorative engraving to the hammer and to a plate opposite the lock plate.
