Glasgow Orkney and Shetland Literary and Scientific Association 1862-1962

To the present day (1962) member the Glasgow Orkney and Shetland Literary and Scientific Association provides the opportunity of meeting fellow exiles - of enjoying conversation, listening to music or to a lecture, dancing or playing whist, and above all, of hearing news from the islands. But it should not be forgotten that the original purpose of the Association was rather more serious, its roots being found in the social conditions which existed in the 1860s.
