In 2007 a Committee of Inquiry into the future of Scotland's hill and island areas was established, prompted by concern at the consequences of changes to the Common Agricultural Policy on farming, especially sheep farming, and the threat to the future of some communities, and also to examine relevant economic, environmental and social matters.
