As required by the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC), daily journals were kept at virtually all HBC posts. Robert Cumming was born in St. Ola in 1795, the son of William Cumming and Janet Yarston. He joined the HBC in 1812 and by 1827 he was placed in charge of the post at Trout Lake, where he remained until its closure in 1828.
