The Breckness Estate

A detailed history of the Breckness Estate, founded in the 1620s and the largest remaining private estate in orkney. It has been owned by the related families of Graham, Watt, Scarth and Macrae, and the surviving private archive of over 18,000 documents forms the basis of this history of its twelve lairds, and has enabled identification of some 2000 of its farms and 1,200 of its tenants.
