Part 1 discusses: the advantages of statistical inquiries; an account of such inquiries in various countries, orior to the commencement of the Statistical Account of Scotland; the geographical circumstances, natural advantages and disadvantages of Scotland; its general divisions; its climate; the health and longevity of its inhabitants; its population; the classes of its inhabitants; its agriculture; its manufactures; its commerce.

Part 2 discusses: the ecclesiastical establishment of Scotland; the systems of education pursued in the country; the management of the poor.
