The story of David Geddes (1751-1811), who rose to a certain local prominence in his native town of Stromness, becoming an agent for the Hudson's Bay Company.
"This story tells how the son of a seaman was helped by his relations to build a life for himself, first in London and then in Quebec. He then set out as Paymaster to the Army which was led by General John Burgoyne to disaster at Saratoga. He survived four years of captivity in Boston and Virginia and then returned to his native Orkney, to become a leading ship owner and banker, and agent for the Hudsons Bay Company in Stromness."
